Suzette Molina, The Eden Alternative

Harbourview Lodge Continuing Care Center in Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia joined the Eden Alternative Registry on September 14, 2015.

This home is beautifully designed with sunlight, gardens, fresh air and nature views in mind.  They are divided into three distinct homes which are all attached by beautifully decorated common areas complete with fireplaces and big screen TV’s.   A smaller number of Elders in each house promotes a household where an Elder’s day can just unfold naturally and where spontaneous things can happen.

In the houses, Staff, Elders, and Families are excited and working more and more as a team formally and informally to transform their communities. It is a dynamic atmosphere as everyone has full access to common areas such as a beauty salon, spa bathing, and community life spaces. It is not unusual to find the Elders and families cooking a special treat in the house’s kitchen. Each Elder has their own private room and is encouraged to decorate with items from their previous home.

Daily life is relaxed here and there are plenty of meaningful activities for each individual to pick and choose from. Mealtimes are flexible and the culinary team is careful to honor Elders requests and offer a wide variety of choices. With all the care and support that goes on in this home it clear to see why Harbourview Lodge Continuing Care Center is thriving with abundant joy and happiness.
