Embracing Elderhood: Creating Meaningful Intergenerational Partnerships

This 2-day training offers participants, called Embracing Elderhood Guides, the tools and resources to coordinate the development of meaningful intergenerational partnerships through the experience of creating an Elder’s legacy. A legacy is part-life story and part-gift to the world, in the form of whatever the Elder wants to share with younger generations. Through the scope of the Eden Alternative Ten Principles, Embracing Elderhood Guides are empowered to train volunteer Recording Partners, ages 16 and older, in person-directed techniques that support the development of rich and engaging relationships with their Elder Storytellers. Embracing Elderhood:
  • Re-defines aging and deepens relationships through the creation of an Elder legacy;
  • Includes thoughtfully-crafted online legacy template from LifeBio; and
  • Weaves Elders back into the social fabric of their communities, wherever they live.

Who should take this training?  Representatives of long-term care communities that wish to:
  • Help shift perceptions of aging in theircommunityover time;
  • Create opportunities for volunteers, both youth and adults, to engage with Elders;
  • Develop partnerships with community organizations who also want to weave Elders back into the social fabric of their communities;
  • Design opportunities for youth to become engaged with the Elders; and
  • Provide ways for Elders to give, as well as receive.

Eden Apprentice: Gifting the Eden Alternative to the Next Generation (Available Late Fall 2011)

Eden Apprentice Training introduces young people, ages 11 to 18 to the Eden Alternative Principles, with an eye toward seeing care and aging in a new light.  Available as a comprehensive training kit, this 1-day experiential workshop promotes a vision of communities that view Elderhood as a valued phase of human development — where Elders are understood to have a gift or legacy to share with younger generations. Inspired by the notion that deep transformation
relies firmly on education of youth, Eden Apprentice Training:
  • Inspires youth participants to become change agents at the grassroots level;
  • Highlights the impact of ageism and reframes perspectives on aging; and
  • Empowers participants to design their own intergenerational projects.

Who should take this training? Representatives of long-term care communities that wish to:
  • Build community connections by introducing youth to the Eden Alternative Principles;
  • Help to spread awareness of culture change values through education of the young;
  • Empower youth to be change agents, by sharing new perspectives on aging and care; and
  • Create powerful approaches to community education where everyone wins.
