The Big Picture

March 04, 2014

In this first webinar, Dr. Power highlights the drawbacks of the traditional “biomedical” view of dementia and shows how it not only fails to address people’s needs, but can actually worsen their situation. He will outline the seven Eden Alternative Domains of Well-Being™ and explain how they provide an important key to understanding how to meet the needs of those living with different cognitive abilities. Dr. Power will also explain why “non-pharmacological interventions,” as they are commonly applied, are often unsuccessful, and why successful medication reduction can be sustained through well-being.

In spite of growing awareness of the lower benefits and higher risks of anti-psychotic drug use in people living with dementia, we cannot successfully reduce these medications until we find more effective approaches to care. According to Dr. Al Power, award-winning author of Dementia Beyond Drugs, the true key to sustained success is enhancing well-being.  In this 6-part webinar series, Dr. Power will describe how the Eden Alternative Domains of Well-Being provide a powerful framework for caring for people who live with dementia.  This new approach offers successful outcomes, where others, including other person-directed approaches, have fallen short.

Presenter: G. Allen Power, MD

This first webinar in this 6-part series took place on September 10, 2013.
