Evergreen Living Center, St. Ignace, MI, joined the Eden Alternative Registry on March 5, 2104.

Located near the beautiful Mackinac Island with a view of Lake Huron they provide a cozy human habitat for 48 Elders. You will instantly feel the difference as you walk in the door because you will notice the gorgeous foliage, soft warm décor and earthly paint colors thorough out the home.

Walls are decorated with pictures of local attractions such as the Mackinac Island and Bridge. All Elders rooms are private and are uniquely decorated with items from their previous homes. When Elders are not engaged in scheduled activities they like to gather with friends and families in the alcove sitting areas where they enjoy snacks, the 60 gallon fish aquarium and bird aviary.

No one goes hungry in this home as there is an always available snack bar and ice cream machine for everyone to enjoy. Mealtime is important in this home and they believe in offering a wide variety of choices complete an always available menu.

Since Elders awaken naturally all breakfasts are made to order at any time of day. The community believes in developing strong relationships, so there is consistency with who spends time during the day and night with the Elders. For relaxation there are three themed spa rooms for Elders to use to get the day started or wind down in at the end of a busy day.  Outside there are two enclosed courtyards with easy access raised garden and flower beds.

Local schools come to help with the planting and harvesting.  Care partner employees are working hard to honor choices and create home by creating deep meaningful relationships and de-institutionalizing the medical model of care. Kevin McElroy said it perfectly when he said, “we are not homelike…we ARE home!”
