Child and Family Services of Child and Family Services of Southwest Michigan renewed their Eden Registry status on September 18, 2009. This is a unique environment that is applying the Principles of the Eden Alternative in a way that impacts Elders throughout their communities. They are using the Eden Philosophy in their adult day service program right now. The Elders spend the day at their centers and can eat breakfast and lunch there. The Elders are actively involved in the daily life of the center from tending the gardens, feeding the fish in the outdoor pond, to wrapping silverware for the meals, to helping prepare the meals themselves. Natural interest groups pop up among the Elders such as playing dominoes, doing crafts, experiencing sing-spirations or hanging out together in the men’s group. At the beginning of each month, the Elders and staff come together to review the menu selections and decide what they want and don’t want and what substitutions will be made. They also plan out the kinds of things they want to do during the month. It is not unusual for the Elders to have 3-4 different choices throughout the day around how they want to spend their time. One center has a golden retriever that provides companionship to the Elders. Their future plans include building on their intergenerational opportunities and enlarging their space. This organization is an inspiration to how the Philosophy of the Eden Alternative can make a difference in the lives of Elders beyond the traditional eldercare environments.
