Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers, MI renewed their Eden Registry status on April 25, 2011. This home is a nice blend of a home working on implementing the Eden Alternative in a traditional nursing home physical structure along with Green House homes called the Groves. This home was originally built in 1919 and is home to 160 Elders. One of the things they are most proud of right now is the Little Pines Child Care Center which has enriched the lives of the Elders and children. Children from the child care center are spending time with the Elders doing fun things like coloring Easter eggs and baking cookies. The child care center has a big playground where the Elders can enjoy watching the children. When it is mealtime, everyone comes to the dining areas. There are two dining areas that serve five neighborhoods. In addition, one neighborhood and the two homes have their own dining areas. The Elders order from a choice driven menu. The Caring Partners Team recently held a Day in Paris event. They worked with the school and members of the larger community to make it happen. The event included French cuisine, music, language, and history. They have had someone from the larger community come in and do a presentation about adaptive hunting equipment. One of the Elders went out with some volunteers to a local deer farm. The Elder was able to use his gun and actually shot a deer! It had been about 12 years since he had enjoyed that simple pleasure. They are having fun with a wellness program. As a part of the program, they have a once a month salad bar that includes educational materials about wellness. They have also started their own version of the Biggest Loser and have lost an impressive 400 pounds so far as a community. This is a community that is growing, and shrinking, and having fun together!
