Sanctuary at Bellbrook in Rochester Hills, MI renewed their Eden Registry commitment on June 22, 2010. This community supports a variety of Elder needs with independent apartments, memory care sanctuaries, assisted living and three skilled care sanctuaries. There are two restaurants and a deli in the community as well as a library that is serviced by the local community library. It is not unusual to find the Elders rallying behind community causes such as fund raising, collecting food and other essentials, hosting educational events or being a pen pal to local school children. Elders wake up when they want and find that a breakfast of their choosing is available for them. The sanctuary approach means that many of the daily decisions are being made by the Anam Cara (soul friends) and Elders. The Anam Cara's are care partners who have been trained in multiple skills so they can meet the needs of the Elders as they arise. There is consistency in these relationships and they meet regularly with the Elders in the sanctuaries to discuss issues, share stories and make decisions together. One Elder commented that there is great camaraderie here and those relationships really give her the sense of security she needs in her home. The home has made a declaration that states "My Best Life Now" and it drives the next steps they take on their Eden Alternative journey.
