Westminster Thurber Community in Columbus, OH renewed their Eden Registry status on November 30, 2011. This is a large community of Elders living in independent and assisted apartments, skilled care, short term rehabilitation services and the Pathway Home. Their one-day World Maker workshop is provided monthly to new and current employees, elders, families and others in the community that want to learn about the Eden Alternative. They have created a meaningful end-of-life ritual for the community. When someone passes, they drape the body in a memorial quilt and they pass through the hallways, led by the chaplain and family, ringing a chime as they go. Everyone stops to pay their respects as the Elder leaves their home for the last time. The hub of the community is quickly becoming the Bistro where you can meet up with others sharing a meal and some good conversation. They have done wonderful things with open dining and weaving it into the fabric of daily life. The Pathway Home continues to thrive and is an example to other organizations about how to create home and family together. There is a strong sense of community as Elders support one another throughout their life from the Fried Egg Club to the Visit Team to gathering in the Bistro. They invite you to come and visit and feel what family can really be like in their home.
