Brookshire House Rehabilitation and Care Community in Denver, CO joined the Eden Registry on January 23, 2012. They are home to about 60 Elders living in two neighborhoods. The outside of the building looks like a house with a front yard. You come in and enter into the family room. At mealtime, the Elders have their choice of three dining rooms and sometimes the living room too. The mail meal of the day often includes some of the Elders' personal recipes. The menu includes many alternatives chosen by Elders. They offer an extended breakfast time so the Elders can awaken naturally. Snacks that the Elders have chosen are available whenever they want in the pantry, e.g. sandwiches, yogurt and chocolate milk. One Elder is a resident artist and his artwork is posted outside the dining room. The community includes several dogs, some fish and birds too. There is a Gardening Club that grows vegetables and flowers during the summer in one of the courtyards. If you are a new employee to the community, you will be introduced to the Eden Alternative through a class called World Makers. In fact, this community is very committed to ongoing education for everyone. Educational opportunities and sign-up sheets are posted so employees can sign up for the things they are interested in. If you are a new Elder moving into the home, they will gather the "Story of Me" with so everyone can get to know you and your preferences quickly. New Elders and their families are encouraged to bring in personal belongings and paint the room their favorite color. The care partners have been working hard at changing the environment including getting rid of the beeping and buzzing of alarms. They are learning that when that environmental noise goes away, the Elders are calmer and do not seem to fall as often. Brookshire House Rehabilitation and Care Community has some really passionate people that understand that they learn more from the Elders than the Elders learn from the employees.
