The Colorado State Veterans Home at Fitzsimons joined the Eden Registry on May 23, 2011. This is home to 180 Elder veterans, spouses and parents. The community is divided into five neighborhoods and has a Main Street where you will see the ice cream parlor, hair salon, community room, and library. The campus they are located on has been an army base since World War I so there is a great deal of pride and patriotism in their culture. The neighborhood teams determine the rhythm of daily life from planning events, to supporting the Elders in sleeping in, to determining how they will welcome plants, animals and children. Each neighborhood is divided into two smaller neighborhoods with a shared kitchen and dining area. The Elders are involved in planning the menus and determining what gets stocked in the kitchen for snacks. When you arrive for your meal, there will be a menu on the table and you can give your order to one of the dietary care partners. If you would prefer something different for breakfast or lunch, you can go to the Blue Plate Diner and order off their menu while you enjoy entertainment on the big screen TV. There is a Cooking Club that draws a lot of interest from the community. The weekly Poker Club and monthly fishing trips are a big pastime here. When the fishermen/women return, there is a barbeque to cook up the catch and share it with others. The Elders have formed up a welcoming committee to meet and greet new Elders as they move in. New employee care partners are informed about how life is lived in the home through a four-hour workshop about The Eden Alternative. The Elders are also very environmentally conscious as Leon, the Sergeant of Recycling, leads the way to creating a Greener home. If you want to learn more about the home, check out this video they have posted on the internet: www.fitzveterans.com. Congratulations and welcome to the Eden Registry family!
