Fairbanks Pioneers' Home in Fairbanks, AK renewed their Eden Registry status on December 19, 2011. They are home to about 93 Elders living independently or receiving assistance and are divided into three neighborhoods. If you visit this home, you are likely to wander in and spend some time in the Moose Café, the Ptarmigan room or the library. The Moose Café used to be the corner store and is now a gathering space for all care partners (Elders, employees and family members). You can get a snack and a cup of coffee and sit and visit, share stories, read the paper or join in one of the spontaneous sing-alongs. The Ptarmigan room is designed to look like a lodge complete with mounted animal trophies and fish. There is a Men's coffee twice a week that includes men from within the home and from the larger community. They enjoy sharing old stories and making up new ones. Once a week a local historian joins them to look at old photos and talk about the stories that go with them. The library has been recently renovated. It is a hub of activity from reading to enjoying resident musicians. One Elder commented that when asked how she wanted the library decorated that she would like to see fish swimming around the room by the ceiling. A local artist came in and did just that so anywhere you stand in the room, you can see fish swimming around with the local mountains behind them. There is a sidewalk that winds around the trees on their property. They have added a greenhouse where the Elders are planning to grow herbs for the kitchen and tomatoes because they love fried green tomatoes. They host an annual Art Walk which includes Elder artwork and a Pioneer Treasure sale that invites the local community to their home. The Elders love to ride the train to Denali Park and have a picnic. This community continues to grow and evolve on their journey.
