Juneau Pioneers' Home in Juneau, AK renewed their Eden Registry status on April 27, 2012. They have divided the home into four neighborhoods that center around a great hall where the whole community comes together. The Elders would tell you that there are just too many activities going on to choose from. The home is located near the mountains and they have a great view from their windows. If you love laughter, then you will want to join in the monthly Joke, Jest and Jive festival. If you love gardening, then you will be spending time in their greenhouse starting plants to use around the home. If you visit the home, stop by and see Nina's dinner plate dahlias. If you love a good party, then you will want to be a part of the annual Senior Prom. The Elders can choose to eat in their neighborhoods or the main dining room. Besides the main menu items, there is always an assortment of other items to choose from at mealtime. Every neighborhood has their day of the week for cooked-to-order breakfast. The community recently pulled together to create a meaningful end-of-life experience for the Elders. The care partners remain in contact with the families for a year or longer after the Elder passes. They have also been working hard on relieving pain, removing the medication carts from the home, getting a new perspective on care of those living with dementia, reducing personal alarms in the home and moving from traditional care plans to growth plans. The Elders recently chose the new furniture for the entry area so pay attention when you stop by to visit. They have just started community wide meetings called Conversations, where everyone can come together to learn, share ideas and connect. The home hosts a Head Start program during the winter which the Elders enjoy being a part of. You might catch the students visiting with the Elders about a subject they are studying in their classes or the Elder teaching the students how to do the Fox Trot! The Juneau Pioneers' Home recently developed a new mission statement which is "to cultivate a caring, vibrant and engaging community where Elders are the heart of the home." They are really soaring to new heights!
