The Ketchikan Pioneers' Home in Ketchikan, AK renewed their Eden Registry status on October 21, 2011. They are an assisted living home for 47 Elders. They are located on an island that has the largest temperate rain forest in the world, the Tongass National Forest. The building is shaped so that all the rooms have view of the water channel or the rain forest. The Elders live on the second and third floors. There is a heated greenhouse accessible from the third floor and many Elders enjoy gardening year round. They have an agreement with the local school district and provide the location for a pre-school of 15-17 children. There are many ways for the children and Elder to interact including Library Fridays where they read to each other. Twice a year they hold an Eden Builder class that lasts four hours. All care partners are invited to attend to learn and get refreshed. The Elders enjoy artwork from local artists and their Foundation assists in acquiring the pieces the Elders want. They have a beautiful living room where you sit down, visit and enjoy coffee. Each neighborhood has its own dining area. Mealtime is for socializing, listening to stories and sharing wisdom. They have learned that some of the best activities start out small and are not planned; they are spontaneous. They have learned that if you treat it like a home, it will be and we have no doubt they will continue to grow on their journey.
