The Alaska Veterans & Pioneers’ Home in Palmer, AK renewed their Eden Registry status on May 11, 2010. This community has subdivided into five neighborhoods, each with its own dining room. The home has a community garden that was designed and completed by student volunteers from the University of Alaska. This year they are hoping to add sidewalks to the garden area. Every year, on Arbor Day, the local Boy Scout troop plants a tree in honor of the Elders living in the home. The Veterans Grove in front of the home is growing nicely. They regularly host an ice cream social at the home that includes not only the Elders and care partners, but also family members and those from the larger community. This home reaches out into the community providing education on topics of interest such as the care of someone living with dementia. Once a month, in connection with a holiday, they host a festival meal for the Elders and their families. They enjoying having pot lucks in the neighborhoods whether they are initiated by the Elders or the care partners. On Wednesday mornings, you will see people gathered in the Mountain View neighborhood enjoying coffee and discussing current events. This is a very resourceful community that enjoys the cultural diversity of the Elders and care partners that call it home.
