Sitka Pioneers' Home in Sitka, AK renewed their Eden Registry status on May 16, 2011. They are home to about 65 Elders living in five neighborhoods. They have a unique location in the middle of downtown Sitka. Across the street is Castle Hill, a historic spot where the US took the Alaska territory from Russia. Many vacationers drop by to see the home and pick up brochures, so many that they had to move the brochure rack because they kept running out! As someone who lives in the home, your room either overlooks the ocean or the mountains. They have all been a real crusade lately to improve the dining experience in the home from the look of the dining room areas to how the food is prepared and served to the choices being offered. The dining rooms and living room areas have been updated and it has given them a homey feel. There is a roving convection oven that the neighborhoods can use for spontaneous cooking events. Local artisans have provided art work for the home. The Mt. Edgecumbe Pre-School is located on the grounds and a local school is close by, so children are a part of life in the home. The Elders have been busy growing the starter plants for the garden and are just waiting now for the soil to warm up so they can be transplanted outside. When a new Elder moves in, they receive a welcome basket and create a collage that depicts highlights from their life, with pictures. It is framed and posted next to their door and spurs lots of connections and conversations. They are slowly working on creating scrapbooks or journals for each Elder where they can continue to document the story of their life's journey. Their home's auxiliary is a big supporter of this project. They love to capture Eden moments in The Prospector (monthly newsletter). They hold a monthly celebration called Home Happenings where they acknowledge big events in everyone's lives. As one family member stated, "Like any home here on earth, life is lived making each day each moment the best it can be for all."
