Salem Lutheran Home in Oakland, CA renewed their Eden Registry status on September 27, 2010. This is home to 159 Elders that live independently, receive assistance or skilled care, need support because they are living with dementia or need hospice care. Their community has been called an oasis because of the beautiful garden areas that are spread across the five acres of grounds. They have nature walks which the Elders and their care partners enjoy. The art committee, lead by the Elders in the home is working on the development of a sculpture garden using the talents of local artists. They have very active Family Councils that aid in making decisions throughout the community and help with community events, such as hosting a pancake breakfast at the Terrace. University students often come into the home to teach the Elders about what they are learning in their classes including topics on art history, music and gardening. The Elders are pen pals with a local class of fourth graders and have a first grade class that comes in once or twice a month just to spend time with the Elders. Enhancing the lives of the Elders is a part of everyone's role in the home. The Hospitality Club works hard at making sure that Elders moving into the home feel welcome right away. This community believes that the Eden Alternative needs to woven into everything they do and they are well on their way to accomplishing that vision.
