Tulare Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Tulare, CA renewed their Eden Registry status on March 14, 2012. They are home to about 90 Elders and have sub-divided their home into seven neighborhoods. All the employee care partners are assigned to support one of the neighborhoods, including management and ancillary staff. The Elders have named their neighborhoods and think of each other as neighbors. They even attend each other's neighborhood meetings, especially if the snack sounds good. The Community Council is a key decision maker in the home. It includes Elder, employee and family care partners. They are continuing to update their home through remodeling. They are adding a play area for children in the front room. Elder and employee care partners fill out the "Please Get to Know Me Life Story Book" which becomes a great resource for helping everyone become well-known. The local school children (Kindergarteners and 4th graders) walk over to spend time with the Elders once a month. The Elders are involved in interviewing and hiring new employees. In nursing, there is a mentor program to guide and support new care partners for the first year. Employees are able to bring their children to work with them which gives the Elders the opportunity to see them grow and be involved in their lives. They have high employee retention because they say "we hire to personality and train to skills". They are testing out a paperless medication pass process.
