The North Star Rehabilitation and Care Community in Denver, CO renewed their Eden Registry status on November 15, 2011. This community provides ongoing support to early travelers to long term care. Their home is divided into two areas: Sante Fe and Mesa. They have uniquely created a home that meets the needs of those who in mid-life have found themselves experiencing chronic illnesses such as multiple sclerosis or mental illness. From the wisdom of their residents they have crafted the Rhythms Principles and aligned them with the Eden Alternative Principles. The Orion Program reaches out into the community to bring needed support to those experiencing multiple sclerosis. The Galaxy Groups, developed based on resident needs, provide a variety of ways for the residents to become engaged in meaning activity throughout the day. Drum circles are a tool they use for communication and community building. At mealtime, they offer many choices off of their menu and you can eat in the large dining room or the smaller café. The residents run a country store stocked with items of their choosing. Stop by and say "hello" to John, who runs the store, if you are visiting. The residents have made friends with the boys from a local orphanage and they invite them to come spend the holidays. They host an annual Art With a Heart auction to raise money for the MS Society. New employees are hired to join specific neighborhoods and residents and employees are involved with hiring, scheduling and discipline. They have created home and have much to teach other Eden Registered Homes. The residents continue to teach us that a life worth living is important at all ages!
