Carmelina is a fictional character inspired by author, Frosini Rubertino's, great-aunt Thea (Aunt) Maria, who lived her entire life on the beautiful Aegean Greek island of Crete, in a town called St. Nickolas. Maria passed away after a stroke in 2009 at the age of 95.
