Carmelina is a fictional character inspired by author, Frosini Rubertino's, great-aunt Thea (Aunt) Maria, who lived her entire life on the beautiful Aegean Greek island of Crete, in a town called St. Nickolas. Maria passed away after a stroke in 2009 at the age of 95. Until then, she lived as independently as possible while family and friends visited her every day, implementing collaborative, common sense, person centered living approaches to maintaining her independence and preserving her quality of life. Those that surrounded her ensured that each day was a meaningful day.
Her goodness and sweetness reminds us every day that we have a moral and legal obligation to respect and preserve the dignity of our elders. We see those bright eyes and smile in every face we encounter in long-term care.
Thea Maria motivates us to influence others to care more: To care enough about people, to care enough about our reputation, to care enough to be part of the solution, and to care enough to do the right thing.
Actual cases of elders in care centers are used in this book to illustrate how nursing systems can sometimes hinder efforts to improve care and quality of life. The information is based entirely on Rubertino's experiences and observations as a consultant, educator, and regulatory specialist in long-term care.
We all know a Carmelina. Her inspiration lives on in all our elders. Whether you are new to long-term care or a seasoned veteran, we hope you will find this book informative and that it will serve as your moral compass on your journey to put the life back into our care centers. May you remain focused on transforming our care culture into meaningful days.
Rubertino challenges us to be courageous enough to be influential. "Influence others to care enough about people, care enough about their reputation, care enough to be part of the solution, and to care enough to do the right thing. Someday, we too, may be a Carmelina".
