Recently, along with some of the Eden Alternative team and our Board Chair, Angie McAllister, I had the good fortune to spend time with Eden Alternative founders, Dr. Bill and Jude Thomas, at their home on Cayuga Lake, NY.

I am excited to introduce our newest course bundle that includes The Framework: Reveal the Possibilities and The Groundwork: Rethink Your Paradigm. Growing and adjusting as an organization, as our world became highly virtual starting in 2020, pushed us to develop two courses that cover the basics of the Eden Alternative approach to person-directed care.  These courses take you deeper into the transformations required to create and support a home where well-being is experienced by all.

We are more than the sum of our parts. Person-directed care begins and ends with the quality of our relationships. And building stronger caring relationships means understanding and honoring the unique identity of every individual we support – their challenges, their strengths, their stories… and the “intersection” between them.

We kicked off the new year with the addition of two exceptionally talented people to the Eden Alternative Home Office Team.

Every time we help just one person feel seen, or feel safer, or feel unconditionally accepted – no matter what their wounds may be – we help create a kinder, more inclusive world.

The Eden Alternative believes that words make worlds. So let’s get clear about this. How much turnover constitutes a “little?” Is it 10%, 20%, 30%? What is reasonable for current leaders to expect (according to the mythology)? 

Creating empowered cultures calls on us to take risks, try new things, and be boldly creative.

That’s how we should view the word ‘facility’. As the queen mother of all dirty words. The F-bomb. Pay attention and you’ll notice it’s still spoken by people in our field constantly. And used by our regulatory agencies. It’s time to eradicate “facility” from our vocabulary.
