Can Old Dogs Learn New Tricks?

The Eden Alternative

Memphis tourYou might think that the Eden Alternative Home Office Team might not have much new to learn when it comes to understanding and living what Elderhood has to offer. After all, we are immersed in the concept all day, every day. Well, even some of these “old dogs” had fun learning some new insights as we attended the Second Wind tour stops in our areas. We are wondering how these insights matched up with your experience of the tour?

  • Aging leads to increased wisdom.
  • We make better decisions as we age based on what is right and good.
  • Our self-compassion increases as we age.
  • Stay connected.
  • Life goes on.
  • You’re just now old enough for what you want to do.
  • Get rid of material stuff to make room for growth.
  • Age Rage = being angry about aging, frustrated that your speed limit has been changed. Acceptance happens when we decrease our resistance to aging.
  • Remember hearing, “Go play or … (I’ll give you something to do)” and the kids fled the room before the “doing” part was stated? Does that happen today?
  • Elder lessons: Slow down; the things that matter most are not on the surface, they are inside (e.g. love); aging is a team sport and we need Elders more than they need us.
  • I am an Elder in the making.
  • Slow down, you are living too fast.
  • Things at the surface don’t matter as much as the things that go deep.
  • Grief is a part of me as much as the color of my eyes.
  • Use yourself.
  • Know yourself.
  • Forgive yourself with loving compassion.
  • It’s your life. Reimagine it!
  • Don’t be afraid to paint your house bright blue.
  • Happy is ageless.
  • We’re all part of a mis-told tale of a generation (from Bill)
  • Music is uniting and universal- it touches our souls deeply
  • If we take the time to listen, Elders have a lot to teach us.
  • Our brains are wired for wisdom.
  • It’s ok, you can move with the music!
  • Leap! Live your vision now while the iron’s hot.
  • “Get off your butts!” (in a good way… and dance!)
  • Make S-P-A-C-E to dream, create, just… breathe
  • Anything, absolutely anything is possible
