Introducing Milton Heights – Welcome to the Eden Registry!
Milton Heights in Regina, Saskatchewan joined the Eden Registry on May 31, 2017. Milton Heights was built in the mid-1950s and was Regina’s first high-rise apartment building. After a major renovation, they will offer affordable housing to close to 180 people in the Regina area.
Since they are conveniently located in the heart of the city, tenants, as their residents prefer to be called, enjoy easy access to the bus, grocery store, doctors, dentist, and the beautiful Wascana Park. Each tenant lives independently in their own suite that has a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom(s). Milton Heights is a pet-friendly building, so you will often see folks taking their dogs outside for a walk. As well, Milton Heights has a community dog, “Ruby.” During the day, Ruby hangs around the lobby and in the office and waits for someone to take her out for a walk.
The lobby on the main floor is a gathering place, where the tenant-run “Social Committee” hosts activities, such as bingo, movie night, art club, and birthday parties. The tenants often conduct garage sales and fundraising activities to assist each other in meeting their home and financial needs. Many times, opportunities to connect happen spontaneously, such as potluck dinners, BBQ’s, or a friendly game of cards. In the office, you will find an administrative assistant, maintenance personnel, and a community life coordinator. All staff are an important part of encouraging and supporting the tenants at Milton Heights. The community life coordinator’s primary goal is to create well-being for all, while eliminating the plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom. The community life coordinator also supports the tenants in finding local resources, such as the food bank, day-to-day support with budgeting, or daily living goals that help tenants maintain their independence. To keep the apartment and grounds looking nice, the whole community participates in the beautification program and assists in planting and watering of gardens boxes and flowerbeds. Milton Heights is truly a home, a place where people come together to live and support each other.
