It’s About Time!
The time has come… the moment for change is now! Believe it or not, it’s been 28 years since OBRA ’87 introduced new regulatory language with the intent of making person-centered care the law of the land. A few years later The Eden Alternative came into being, which, along with others like the Pioneer Network, introduced a radical new approach to care. As pioneers and change agents, we knew there was a better way.
Today, we find ourselves in 2015 with the early adopters of culture change still struggling to convince the masses that change is not just an option, but an absolute necessity. Deep cultural change is still an elusive goal in so many care environments, leaving so many of us frustrated that a life worth living is still not a reality in so many places. Time and experience have also shown us that sustainable change must involve all stakeholders. Culture change is a community-wide affair. It cannot be truly successful without facilitating meaningful conversations that engage all care partners, both professionals and consumers, across the entire continuum of care.
Our 2016 International Conference will create opportunities to make these connections and explore different challenges from varying perspectives. As care needs increase with a growing aging population, now more than ever, we need to work together to lead by example and model what can and should be.
Between now and our conference in Little Rock, Arkansas from May 3-5, 2016 you will be hearing from us and from the Elders directly regarding why we can delay no more. No more shifting priorities. No more excuses. No more lip service. No more delays. We need to be ready to call everyone to action and hold everyone accountable to making person-directed care a reality for Elders and others accepting support, no matter where they call home.
