Like A Penny Waiting For Change
An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. In our field we do not deal with physics as Newton did, yet his first law of motion is inescapable.
Our goal is to create a world where we no longer engage in culture change. We hope that at some point concepts like care partnerships, person directed care, and Domains of Wellbeing are the standard not the solution.
However, to get this beast in motion takes an unimaginable amount of force from a vast network of dedicated teams. The task may seem so daunting at times that many don’t know where to begin.
It often takes great leadership to spur people to action, and indeed it is sometimes the only thing that can bring about that first step. Maybe you and your group are ready for change, but everyone in the group is waiting for a leader to get things started. Everyone assumes the leader will come from somewhere else and as a result no one steps up.
Leadership does not require permission. We wrote last week about a woman who contacted the Eden Home Office looking for a change because she was basically told that the quality of care for the Elders was none of her business. Anyone, even someone who is “just a housekeeper” as she was told, has the authority to stand up and say it can be different.
If not, then we are all just pennies waiting for change.
