Principle One Gets the Spotlight in McKnights

Laura Beck, The Eden Alternative

safe_imageYesterday, McKnight’s posted an interesting article highlighting The Eden Alternative’s Principle One — access it here.  For those of you who need a little context, Principle One of the Eden Alternative Philosophy states that “The three plagues of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom account for the bulk of suffering among our Elders.”  The piece in McKnight’s also references a thoughtful piece by Pulitzer Price winner Amy Ellis Nutt.  Check it out… those of us who find ourselves fighting the notion that person-directed practices are “soft science” can find redemption in arguments like Nutt’s that loneliness has very serious, very concrete implications.
