Riverside South Enrichment Community, Ames, IA, joined the Eden Alternative Registry on April 9, 2014.

This lively community is home to 40 Elders divided into three separate and unique neighborhoods each with its own culture and personality. They have an active neighborhood council that meets and advises the care partner employees of preferred activities and menu choices.

Each month they suggest a theme meal for the kitchen to cook. Elder’s rooms are filled and decorated with items from their former home ensuring that choice and identity are always being honored. Relationships and closeness are a vital part of the culture of this home.

Each Elder has a care partner employee Ambassador that spends time with them getting to know their simple pleasures and ensuring they are well known to others in the community as well. Meal times are always an eventful time of day when everyone gathers and enjoys a nice delicious meal why visiting with their neighbors. To appeal to the wide variety of tastes they offer the main menu for the day and always available menu as an option.

Daytimes are filled with a wide variety of things to do such as playing on the computer, gardening in the courtyard, popping popcorn and visiting with friends and family. During the warmer months everyone gathers outside to soak up the rays and eat freshly grilled barbeque. If you stop by on a Friday you might see them having fun all wearing our pajamas or with our clothes inside out for Friday dress up day. It’s obvious that the folks that live and work at Riverside South are one big tight knit family.

Congratulations! Sounds like a wonderful, much fun place! I especially like the Ambassador idea and the PJ’s or inside out clothes on Friday! I wish I lived close enough to drop by! Barbara Smullen (Elder and Eden Associate, Rochester Presbyterian Home, Rochester, N.Y.
